October had some of my favorite prompts for microfiction because they were Halloween based. It was really fun, and I’m disappointed it didn’t do all of them. I was pretty busy with last-minute pre-launch items for my debut novel, Shadows of Colesbrooke. Thankfully, the release turned out great and I’m in love with the finished product!

Prompt: Night
“Just because night is our favorite time of day doesn’t mean we don’t sleep at night. We like taking naps just as much as the humans.”

Prompt: Murder
She didn’t mean to fall in love with him.
Every time he smiled, the burning desire for his blood tingled through her body.
Never again, she reminded herself. But the urge didn’t fade.
So she murdered him, dumping the body in a dumpster and removing all temptation.

Prompt: Blood
Unable to stand the white walls anymore, I painted them red.
I didn’t have paint, but I did have plenty of blood. Now the smell of my walls makes me hungry.
I should have stayed with white.

Prompt: Organ
Searching the dead body, I found his driver’s license. Born in ’76. Johnson Frank Dan. Restrictions A. Sex M. Eyes GRN. Donor.
Bingo. I hoisted him into my truck and sped home, dreaming of the organ feast I’d be eating tonight.

Prompt: Away
They say distance makes the heart grow stronger. All I’ve found is that being away from potential food makes me cranky, and none of their hearts taste any better when I capture some.
October 6, 2019
Prompt: Demons
Everyone has their own demons, sometimes they’re just more human than addicting vices.
October 7, 2019
Prompt: Music
Some people liked using music to cover up wild nights in bed with their lovers. I preferred to use music to cover up the screams of my meals. Not all walls are soundproof, and I want to remain hidden.
October 8, 2019
Prompt: Perfume
My roommate applied perfume to her wrists, humming to herself.
It didn’t help. If she really wanted to hide the smell of her blood, she’d dump the entire bottle on her arms and head.
Thankfully, I remained still in control. I couldn’t afford to murder another roommate.

Prompt: Bones
Bones rattled inside the bag as she dropped it on the floor. The witch picked through the opening, smiling.
“You sure you want this, sweetie?”
She nodded, terrified. Immortality would give her the edge needed to kill off vampires, if she could survive the transition.
October 10, 2019
Prompt: Lovers
Guilty he’d devoured the girl the night before her wedding, he sought out the groom and sucked him dry, too. He never could leave behind half of a pair of lovers.
October 11, 2019
Prompt: Skin
Skin used to be attractive. The way sweat gleamed, how light and shadows emphasized its spread over muscles and curves. Now, it’s a flimsy barrier to the veins that set my fangs on edge. My eyes are only drawn to it where it’s at its thinnest.
October 12, 2019
Prompt: Monster
Walking alone at nights didn’t frighten her anymore. Since she’d turned, she was more of a monster than anything else out on the streets. Now she was terrified of herself.
October 14, 2019
Prompt: Gums
She told me it would be worse if I came, but I couldn’t stay behind. Just the idea of a fight made my gums ache, and I’d never witnessed a vampire war.
She was right.
October 15, 2019
Prompt: Alone
I asked her to stay by me with labored breath.
She told me we all die alone anyway.
October 16, 2019
Prompt: Chunk
“Hot or warm?”
“Wha?”
“How do you want your werewolf soup?”
“What’s in werewolf soup?”
He shoved the pot in front of my nose. Large chunks of stringy red meat rolled around with potatoes and carrots.
October 17, 2019
Prompt: Darkness
“Is there hell if you’re immortal?”
“Yes. One day the sun will die, the earth will vaporize, and I’ll still exist, alone in darkness.”
October 18, 2019
Prompt: Ghosts
Everyone imagines ghosts as humans. What if they were wrong?
What if a cat wanted to stay behind and haunt an abusive owner?
What if a dog wanted to watch over their human?
What if vampires really have souls and I’m back because I fear my eternal future?
October 19, 2019
Prompt: Devour
“When she asked for a snack, I didn’t expect her to devour my heart.”

Prompt: Oblivion
With each drink, he brought himself closer to the oblivion he desperately desired. Only then would he no longer remember the pile of bodies drained of blood at his feet.
October 24, 2019
Prompt: Cellar
Never go in the cellar. My parents had repeated the words for as long as I can remember. At the cusp of adulthood, I decided I was old enough to venture in. Some skeletons are best left undiscovered.
October 25, 2019
Prompt: Alive
She took upon herself immortality in an attempt to feel alive. Now in death, she feels even less.
October 30, 2019
Prompt: Death
I always wanted to live forever. Turns out eternity is worse than death.
October 31, 2019
Prompt: Raven
When I became a monster, no one followed me. Alone I walked the streets for decades, my only friend a faithful raven.
Each time death catches it, my friend always returns, a new reincarnation to keep me company.
It’s the only way I can face eternity.
