“#Listen, kid, it may sound a little too fairytale perfect, but you gotta get it into your head this is now your story. You’ve experienced it today. You and I, we share in the curse. We have the hunger. You’ve felt it.”

“I’ve already told you everything I know, kid, or is everything I’m telling you #leakin’ out of all the holes in your brain?”

“Why thank you,” Julia said with a laugh as she stepped inside. “But unfortunately, we don’t get the benefits of thresholds #like humans do. Keep that in mind. Other vampires might slip in and pay you a visit late one night.”

Normally Thomas found Sean’s crass manner to be rather amusing, but the #long surgery had dampened all of his general feelings of endearment for Sean’s usual immaturity.

Thomas’ body ached for him to reach out his hand and grab the mug, to #lick the side of the mug and to drink. How could he consider that? Disgusted, he pushed it further away. His hand brushed the spill when he released the mug’s handle.

“You okay?”

“I’m fine. Just the water,” said Thomas.

The kid took his money and let him #leave, but Thomas was sure the cashier thought he was on drugs. Maybe he’d call the police, but Thomas didn’t care. He finally had something to drink.

“However, the treachery of these feeders has gone further than that. They’ve also murdered an innocent man in our territory, making no attempt to hide what they’ve done from human #law enforcement. They’re doing the same in their own territory.”

“Artemis wants to get him to a hospital,” Sean said. “He was mugged last night.”

“I wasn’t mugged,” Thomas said, his voice a little too #loud. “I was attacked.”

“Isn’t that the same thing?” Penny asked.

“No, mugging is for money,” Artemis pointed out. “Being attacked is just violent.”

They were being unreasonable, and their refusal to #listen only made the wolf want to attack more.

He can tell you what mustard gas feels #like when it fills your lungs and describe the sound of a Panzer tank exploding.

“I need extra pairs of eyes while we’re hunting. I can hold down the fort #long enough for you and a few others to make your kill, but after you do it, you’ll have to override your wolf’s mind but stay in the lupine form. Help me control the chaos.”

Clara #licked her lips, itching to fill the silence.

She #left him on the futon and made instant coffee. It didn’t cover the smell quite as well as the café’s brews, but it helped.

Had Clara sprouted three different heads at that moment, her brother would not have been more surprised.

“What?” he shouted so #loud that Clara winced, her sharp hearing ringing.
